Health Benefits of Motherwort

Motherwort (leonurus cardiaca), also known as lion’s tail, is a prickly bush, belonging to the mint (lamiaceae) family. Motherwort is native to Asia and Southeastern Europe primarily used as tea or tincture for its potential medicinal properties. Motherwort has been traditionally used for thousands of years to help treat heart disease, anxiety, menopause and irregular menstruation.

Motherwort is rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids, sterols, triterpenes and tannins. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body and may help prevent the risk of chronic diseases.

Motherwort has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Motherwort contains essential amino acids.

Motherwort is a sedative that may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that 32% of people with sleep disorders who consumed motherwort for 28 days had a significant improvement in anxiety and depression while 48% of participants showed moderate symptoms and improvement in blood pressure levels.

Motherwort may also boost your mood and promote sleep.

Motherwort may also help reduce the risk of postpartum blood loss but more research is needed.

Motherwort may interact with certain medications including medications that may cause sleepiness or blood thinners.

As always, consult with your physician.
