Health Benefits of Cascara Sagrada
Cascara sagrada (rhamnus purshiana) also known as bitter bark or sacred bark is an herb native to North America that has been used for many centuries as a laxative. Native Americans used cascara sagrada to treat constipation, digestive problems, gallstones, gonnorhea, joint and muscle pain, and dysentery.
Cascara sagrada contains plant compounds called anthraquinone which provide powerful laxative effects.
Cascara sagrada recommended use for a limited period of time has been associated with few side effects most are mild. Long term use of high doses of cascara sagrada is not recommended and may have adverse effects including liver injury.
In 2002, the FDA ruled that it no longer approves cascara sagrada as an over-the-counter laxative (OTC) but is currently available as an herbal supplement.
Cascara sagrada may interact with certain medications.
As always, consult with your physician.
