Health Benefits of Goldenseal
Health Benefits of Goldenseal
Goldenseal (hydrastis canadensis) also known as goldenroot or yellow root is a plant native to the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Traditionally, Native Americans used goldenseal to treat a variety of conditions including wounds, mouth ulcers, skin and eye conditions, digestive disorders and cancer. Goldenseal is commonly used to treat respiratory tract infections including the common cold.
Goldenseal has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.
Goldenseal is rich in alkaloids including hydrastine and berberine. Animal studies have shown that goldenseal’s compounds appeared to kill bacteria and other microbes, slow tumor growth, and reduce spasms.
Goldenseal may help detoxify the body. Goldenseal may help boost your immune system.
Goldenseal may help treat urinary tract infections (UTI) due to its berberine content. Goldenseal may help treat chlamydia and herpes but more research is needed.
Goldenseal may also help treat skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis.
Goldenseal may also promote oral health and prevent tooth infections. Studies have shown that using goldenseal as toothpaste or mouthwash may help soothe inflamed gums.
Goldenseal may also treat digestive issues such as diarrhea, gastritis or constipation.
Goldenseal may help treat type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels.
Goldenseal may have some side effects including nausea, vomiting, and reduced liver function.
Goldenseal may interact with certain medications.
As always consult with your physician.
